THIS. This is what it’s all about, folks. The iconic “The last Unicorn” or in German “Das letzte Einhorn« is THE childhood movie for me. Released in 1982 it is still, to this day, shown on German national TV as a special Christmas movie and there is no year in all my life, that I did not watch this movie on the eve of 24th December.
The movie itself doesn’t have to do anything about Christmas, but it’s a German thing I guess, and it has established itself as one of the cult movies there. I have been growing up on German TV since I can think, and this is a mayor chuck on my childhood made into an EPIC papercraft diorama.
No actual figures are being sold of the last Unicorn that actually even slightly resemble the one in the anime, so I had to do it justice. Been working on this baby for weeks, making sure to take breaks and coming back to it, so it absolutely 100% resembles the Unicorn lady in the movie. And here she is.
This is the reason I have even started papercrafts all these years back, because I wanted to get anime figurines that I couldn’t buy in my country back then and then making variants and poses of figures I wanted to have displayed in my room, without spending huge amounts of cash on limited-edition figures and shipping. So, making this one is another HUGE stepping stone in my designer skills and art. I am so happy with this one, I simply love it.

The papercraft itself is unfolded to 27 cm and has 11 pages to print. It consists of a separate 3D diorama base of the enchanted Unicorn woods she lives in, meaning a 3D stand and semi 2D 2-sided trees and 2D fauna around. Then you have the main 3D Unicorn papercraft, with a 2D mane that is glued on the neck for a simpler assembly.
The unicorn horn is 3D as well as the tail, so those parts would be a bit fiddlier to make. The legs are also thinner, since she has an iconic form to her elegant body, so those can be additionally reinforced with curled-up paper inside them to make them hold together nicer and make her stand better.

I probably know every line in the movie by heart, it is such an epic masterpiece, also made by some former Ghibli employees, and the 80s vibe in this animation is to-die-for gorgeous. Old-style anime are such a beauty to watch and I love them. Please, give the anime a watch. It’s a MUST WATCH for every anime fan out there that doesn’t know it yet.
I’ll be making this one in the future when I get the time to. I need this one in my display SO BAD XD I love her ;_;
Hope you like it and happy crafting~
