Happy Pokemon day everybody! Since it's a Pokemon jubilee today, how better to celebrate it than with a Pokemon papercraft :D
Prince Piplup template preview was already posted, and since I made the papercraft figure myself, I can also post the preview of the assembly, along with some building tips, so here he is :)
It wasn’t actually that tedious to make as I thought when I made that crown and extras, but it does take some extra time to make all the pieces (if you want, since the crown and the trident are optional parts). I probably needed about 12 hours to make it, along with the cutting-out, but I did take it more slowly and took my sweet time making it. So here are some assembly tips to go along:
ASSEMBLY TIPS:
The template is made op out of 3 parts that you make separately: The Piplup itself with the royal cape, the crown and the trident. You can start on any of those 3 parts really.
I started with the Piplup papercraft, with the beak part. When you have that, move it aside and start making the head from top till the middle where the beak starts. When you have that part, glue the pre-made beak in there and finish the head with the last few head parts (including his blue bib part that goes in the front of his body).
Once the head is done, move along and make the 2 flippers separately, and the royal cape (the cape also has an optional blue inner part, that you can leave out) with the tail. The cape itself is best done making the tail and the front cape itself separate, and then gluing the tail inside the front cape hole. Once that is done, glue each part of the inner blue cape on there, and it’s done.
Now that you have the cape, put it around the head with the blue bib part, and glue it on with the front royal handkerchief part. This should be enough to get the cape in place and for it to hold, since there is no need to glue the whole cape edge on there.
Now you have 2 options, either make the rest of the body separately by starting with the legs and moving up and then, at the end, gluing on the body with the head, OR start with the shoulder part, gluing on the hands, moving along to the bottom and closing it up with the bottom sole parts. Either way that suits you, I do suggest putting in a bit of weights in the legs at the end so it can start nicely, since if you put the crown on there, it can become quite top-heavy and it can tip over. So be sure to reinforce it with some pebbles or smaller rocks in there and you’ll be good.
Next is the crown. Since the crown is open at the bottom, I suggest starting at the top and moving to the bottom. Start by making the pokeball ornament on there and move to the golden stand. Now put it aside, and make the red crown part separately, as well as the golden crown spikes. When you have the red part done, glue in the pokeball ornament with the golden stand on there, that’s the easy part. For the crown spikes, start from the outer side and move towards the inner side. Make the front part first, glue on the edges of the crown on there next, and close those with the inner side by simply gluing it on the remaining flaps. When you have the spikes done, put glue on the remaining flaps and carefull slide the 2 pieces together and glue it on the right place. And the crown is done.
Now since the crown is loose and it doesn’t really look as good if you just glue it on like that, I do suggest following tip. *Pro-tip: When you make the head of Piplup, glue in a magnet on the inner edge side and then glue the other magnet part on the inner side of the crown. That way the crown will always stand on the right place without falling off, and it can also be optionally displayed with the crown off or on whenever you feel like it :) That’s what I did in any case, since it’s a nice interactive option.
All that is left to do is the trident, which is essentially a more complex box craft. Start with the front part of the trident and glue on the edges on there and close is with the back part, nice and simple. The trident itself doesn’t really need and reinforcement, since it’s small and boxy and holds up just fine. But if you want to be 200% sure, you can additionally reinforce the inner part with a stick that you put inside just when you are about to close it at the bottom.
And there it is, my prince Piplup papercraft assembly.
***As with any of my papercraft, the blank, locked PDO file is always in the files, along with all the PDF versions, and you can help yourself with that. But since some parts can be made in a simpler way, I like to post my assembly experience and give some extra tips on how to make it with lesser effort :)
